ANNUAL BROOKLYN UNDERGROUND FILM FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES 2005 VENUE

BROOKLYN, NY-- The Third Annual Brooklyn Underground Film Festival will take place April 21-24, 2005 at the Brooklyn Lyceum at the edge of Park Slope.   For The Brooklyn Underground it's vital to have a space that can house not only a film festival but also an art show in an environment that provides a unique experience beyond the expectations of a typical film festival.   The four-day festival will feature innovative films, music, art, parties, and discussions.   The Brooklyn Underground Film Festival is an event where new artists and filmmakers can convene and explore each other's work.

The Brooklyn Underground expands the definition of film festival.   It does more than screen movies.   The event creates a fresh arena and an inspirational environment for filmmakers, artists, and the audience to explore the arts.   Founded in 2002 by three Pratt graduates The Brooklyn Underground has successfully created an outlet for emerging new voices from around the world.

The Brooklyn Underground Film Festival focuses on new filmmakers with fresh films that are not represented in the festival circuit, which makes Brooklyn Underground a true alternative to other film festivals.   In its first year The Brooklyn Underground Film Festival received over 600 submissions and premiered over 80 new films, representing twelve countries.   In its second year it received over 800 submissions.   Of the films screened, 85% were premiers.   Brooklyn Underground is screening films that are not seen on the the mainstream festival circuit.   Programming Director Josh Koury brings new filmmakers to light.   Often the selected filmmakers travel from all over the world to be at the festival and avail themselves to discussions with the audience. The Brooklyn Underground has established itself not only as an annual film festival but also a year-round arts organization.   For sixteen months the organization was located at The Nest, an old cardboard factory in DUMBO.   Faced with a completely raw, warehouse space Brooklyn Underground volunteers built a 100 seat theater, bar, band stage, and art gallery.   For its third year Brooklyn Underground has chosen the Brooklyn Lyceum for those same reasons. At the western edge of Park Slope, the Brooklyn Lyceum, what once was Public Bath #7, is a beautiful warehouse space that Technical Director Cris Moris will design in the tradition of past festivals.   The Brooklyn Underground will make the space their own by developing it into a comprehensive film and arts space.   This construction effort adds an urban character to the festival further setting it apart from other film festivals.

Throughout the last year Brooklyn Underground hosted numerous art openings, concerts, and a weekly film series.   Artists such as SWOON, Matt Hollister, Mike Force, members of Toy Shop and other street artists have showcased work at Brooklyn Underground events.   The Brooklyn Underground partnered with the infamous Black Label Bicycle Club to host the Run For Your Life party featuring bicycle art and customized double-decker "tallbikes".   The Brooklyn Underground Film Festival will take place April 21-24, 2005.   Now more established and refined than ever before, there will be more films, more parties, more artists, all at the Brooklyn Lyceum, a historic landmark in the borough that is on the cutting edge of art and youth culture.   This year's festival will surpass what you've learned to expect from a film festival.

This year is BUFF's decisive year.
